Neurological Rehabilitation for Communication
Communication is a vital part of our lives. It connects us to our loved ones, enables us to express our thoughts and feelings, and allows us to engage in the world around us. It can be extremely tough when our ability to communicate is challenged. I offer gentle, supportive and evidence-based rehabilitative therapy to assist you on your road to recovery.

I offer home visits to private homes and assisted-living facilities in and around the Cape Town City Bowl and the Atlantic Seaboard.
Understanding Acquired Speech, Language and Cognitive Communication Difficulties
Acquired speech, language and cognitive communication difficulties can arise when certain parts of the brain or nervous system are injured or damaged. This can be due to various causes such as stroke, a traumatic brain injury, brain tumours, or degenerative neurological diseases like Parkinson's disease or motor neurone disease.

Speech Difficulties: These involve difficulties with the physical production of speech. Conditions like dysarthria and apraxia effect the speech production process, thus effecting one's ability to produce clear and intelligible speech.

Language Difficulties: These effect one's ability to understand and use language. Aphasia is a language disorder that can affect one's ability to remember words, put sentences together, understand spoken language, read, and write. It can occur suddenly, such as after a stroke or a brain injury, or it can develop gradually due to a progressive neurological disease.

Cognitive Communication Difficulties: These are related to impairments in cognitive processes that support communication, such as attention, memory, reasoning and problem solving skills. Individuals may struggle with organising their thoughts, staying focused or on topic, remembering what they were saying, or understanding complex information.

The Rehabilitation Journey:

I believe that every individual's path to improved communication is unique. The rehabilitation journey that I offer is evidence-based, individualised, and deeply supportive, ensuring that each client receives the care they need in a manner that is right for them.
Evidence-Based Approach: I utilise the latest research and proven techniques to guide the therapy. This ensures that the methods are effective and grounded in scientific evidence, helping to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Individualised Care: No two clients are the same, and neither are their therapy needs. I take the time to understand your specific challenges and goals, creating a personalised treatment plan that addresses your unique situation. This tailored approach helps you achieve meaningful progress at a pace that works for you.
Gentle and Supportive Environment: I recognise that dealing with speech, language, and cognitive communication difficulties can be overwhelming. My therapy sessions are designed to be a safe and nurturing space where you can feel understood and encouraged. I am here to help guide you and to support you on this journey.
Holistic Focus: I don't believe that communication difficulties should be viewed in isolation. My approach considers the entire person and how their communication challenges impact all aspects of their life. The journey of communication rehabilitation is closely linked with one's emotional, social, and cognitive state. By looking at the broader context of the individual and their life, I provide therapy that supports them as a whole person.
Whether you are recovering from a neurological event or managing a chronic condition, my approach care is designed to enhance your overall quality of life.
